Endurance Without Compromise

Endurance is often framed as a mental quality. The ability to push through, to tolerate discomfort, to keep moving when the body wants to stop. That framing is partially true and mostly incomplete.

What most people experience as hitting a wall is a physiological event, not a psychological one.

The Three Substrates

Your body runs on three primary fuel systems: phosphocreatine for explosive efforts lasting seconds, glycolytic pathways for efforts lasting minutes, and oxidative metabolism for everything longer. At any given intensity, all three are contributing — the ratio shifts with effort level and duration.

Endurance performance is largely determined by how efficiently you can sustain oxidative metabolism, how well you delay glycogen depletion, and how quickly you can access and oxidise fat as a fuel source.

Glycogen: The Limiting Substrate

The body stores approximately 400–500g of glycogen across muscle and liver. At moderate-to-high intensity, this represents roughly 90–120 minutes of fuel. Depletion triggers fatigue through multiple mechanisms — not just energy deficit, but impaired central nervous system function, altered muscle recruitment patterns, and reduced capacity to buffer lactic acid.

Managing glycogen is therefore central to sustained performance. Pre-exercise loading, intra-exercise fuelling where duration demands it, and post-exercise replenishment are all part of that management.

The Role of Supplementation

Certain compounds have demonstrated consistent effects on endurance-relevant physiology. Beta-alanine buffers intramuscular acidosis. Sodium bicarbonate extends high-intensity tolerance. Creatine enhances phosphocreatine resynthesis and supports repeated efforts. Caffeine increases fat oxidation, spares glycogen, and reduces perception of effort.

None of these replace training adaptation. All of them support it — provided they are dosed correctly and timed appropriately.

The Practical Frame

Endurance is built over years, not weeks. The athletes who sustain high output over long durations are not doing so on willpower alone. They have optimised their training, their fuelling, and their recovery into a coherent system.

Supplementation is one component of that system. Used precisely, it extends the ceiling of what training can produce.
