Performance nutrition has traditionally focused on macronutrients and specific compounds: protein for muscle, carbohydrates for fuel, targeted supplements for specific outcomes. What is increasingly clear is that a critical variable underpins all of these — how effectively your gut absorbs and processes what you consume.
The gut microbiome sits at the centre of that question.
What the Microbiome Does
The roughly 38 trillion microbial cells in the human gut collectively perform functions the body cannot execute independently. They synthesise certain B vitamins and vitamin K. They ferment dietary fibre into short-chain fatty acids — particularly butyrate — which serve as the primary fuel for colon cells and have systemic anti-inflammatory effects. They modulate immune function, influencing both innate and adaptive immune responses. They regulate intestinal permeability. And they produce neurotransmitter precursors, connecting gut health to mood and cognitive function.
Exercise and the Microbiome
Moderate exercise has consistently positive effects on microbiome diversity, associated with better health outcomes. However, very high training loads — particularly endurance training at extreme volumes — can temporarily compromise intestinal barrier function (exercise-induced gut permeability), leading to transient bacterial translocation, systemic inflammation, and impaired nutrient absorption.
Managing this is not a reason to train less. It is a reason to support gut integrity deliberately.
What Supports Microbiome Health
Dietary diversity is the primary driver of microbiome diversity. A broad range of plant foods provides the varied fibre types that different microbial species require. Fermented foods — yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut — introduce live organisms and have shown positive microbiome effects in recent clinical research.
Specific probiotic strains have demonstrated performance-relevant benefits: Lactobacillus plantarum 299v for iron absorption, L. acidophilus and B. lactis combinations for respiratory infection resistance in athletes, and various Lactobacillus strains for gut permeability during heavy training.
The Practical Frame
Supporting gut health is not a separate project from performance nutrition — it is the foundation of it. Poor gut integrity and low microbiome diversity mean that even an excellent nutritional protocol will underdeliver. Build the foundation, and every other intervention works better.
